MSME (Udyam) Registration
Udyam registration is the official recognition of a business as a micro, small or medium enterprise. It is done online and linked to your PAN and GST details. Sanmayu prepares the information, files the registration and checks the certificate, which buyers, banks and government schemes ask for.

- Micro and small manufacturersLooking for scheme benefits and easier credit.
- Service businessesAsked for an Udyam certificate by clients or banks.
- Suppliers to large buyersWho are required to register for payment terms.
Is Udyam registration free, and which website is official?
Yes. The official portal states that registration is online, paperless and free, and that no private system, agency or person is authorised to do MSME registration. Sites that charge a fee for the same registration are not the portal. Our service covers preparing and checking your details; the registration itself costs nothing.
Which products or businesses does this apply to?
Manufacturing and service enterprises that fall within the MSME definitions. Your category depends on investment and turnover, and is for an expert to confirm.
How does MSME (Udyam) Registration work?
The stages, from your documents to the decision. The right-hand column is what most often slows each stage.
| Stage | Who acts | What happens | What can hold it up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Check what exists | Sanmayu with you | Whether the enterprise already holds a registration; one enterprise files only one Udyam registration, and older EM-II or UAM holders re-register | A second registration filed for the same enterprise |
| 2 · Details ready | You | Aadhaar of the owner or signatory, PAN, GSTIN, address and activities gathered | Details that differ between PAN, GST and the form |
| 3 · Aadhaar validation | Owner or signatory | Aadhaar number validated on the Udyam portal | Mobile number not linked to the Aadhaar |
| 4 · PAN and GST | Portal | PAN and, where the GST law requires one, GSTIN verified; investment and turnover are taken automatically from the Income Tax and GST systems | Records that do not match, or figures that look wrong |
| 5 · Enterprise details | Sanmayu with you | Name, address, date of commencement and the activities, with NIC codes, entered | Activity codes chosen without care |
| 6 · Self-declaration | Owner or signatory | Declaration submitted; no document is uploaded | Wrong facts entered here attract a penalty under the Act |
| 7 · Certificate | Portal | Udyam Registration Certificate issued online with a QR code | Details that need correction afterwards |
| 8 · Updates | You with Sanmayu | Details updated on the portal as the business changes | Outdated figures on the record |
Which documents are needed for MSME (Udyam) Registration?
| Document | Why it is needed | Common problem |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar number of the owner or signatory | Validated on the Udyam portal | Mobile number not linked |
| PAN | Required; the portal verifies it with the tax system | Name differs from other records |
| GSTIN | Required where the GST law requires the enterprise to have one; investment and turnover are read against it | GST profile out of date. GST Registration |
| Business name, address and date of commencement | Describes the enterprise on the certificate | Address differs from other registrations |
| Activities and NIC codes | Show whether the enterprise manufactures, provides services or both | Codes that do not match the work done |
| Investment and turnover | Decide the category; fetched from tax records, not typed in | Records that do not reflect the business |
| Earlier EM-II or UAM number, if any | Older registrations must be replaced by Udyam | Registration number not at hand |
How are investment and turnover worked out, and do exports count?
You do not type them in. The portal is linked to the Income Tax and GST systems and takes investment and turnover from them, and the enterprise is classed as micro, small or medium on both measures together; where the two fall in different classes, the higher class applies. The Ministry's note states that exports are not counted in the turnover figure.

What commonly holds MSME (Udyam) Registration up?
- Data mismatchThe portal pulls details linked to your PAN and GST; differences cause errors or a wrong category.
- Wrong classificationFigures placed in the wrong category affect which MSME schemes you can use.
- Lookalike paid sitesThe official portal charges no fee; be wary of sites that do.
- Duplicate registrationAn enterprise files only one registration. Check for an older UAM or Udyam number before you start.
Does Udyam expire, and what happened to Udyog Aadhaar?
The Ministry describes Udyam as a permanent registration with no renewal. It should still be updated when facts change. Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) and EM-II holders were required to re-register on Udyam, and an enterprise cannot hold more than one Udyam registration, though many activities can sit under one.
